Jason Kentner and Karen Lewis receive award in Bronx Grand Concourse Competition
Knowlton faculty members Jason Kentner and Karen Lewis were recently given an honorable mention by the Design Trust for Public Space and the Bronx Museum of the Arts for their proposal for the Bronx Grand Concourse Competition. Their proposal, called Inner Space, will be a featured project among other honorable mentions in an exhibition at The Center for Architecture, and was the only proposal requested to be developed into a large site / context model.
Inner Space was designed to increase pedestrian activity on the auto-dominated Grand Course through three small-scaled proposals that transform and augment found spaces and activities.
"The Notch" appropriates the entrances of large residential buildings, designing these found spaces to become public / private porches that mix residential and street life.
"The Strip" is a traffic-calming device that breaks up the monotony of the Grand Concourse, allows for pedestrian activity, and establishes a clear sense of hierarchy in the auto-dominated landscape by articulating areas for crossing.
"The Corner" uses modest architecture and landscape insertions to facilitate programs that bring the community together. By making use of prominent locations as well as utilizing marginalized sites, the community can be rapidly defined and redefined around temporary urban programs such as car washes, book sales, markets, parades and performances.
There were 35 projects short listed and featured on the web exhibition - 11 of which were selected for the spotlight exhibition. The exhibition opening is November 10.
