Travel Opportunities

One of the strengths of the Knowlton School of Architecture is the diversity of travel opportunities that are available to students. Formal travel programs range from a 10-week quarter abroad in Italy to shorter trips to London over spring break, while informal travel opportunities also abound.

Quarter-Length Programs

The Italy Study Abroad Program is the only KSA quarter-long abroad program. The program provides undergraduate students a full emersion experience in Italian architectural culture, and allows students to complete architecture studio requirements and electives.

Summer Travel Programs

The landscape architecture section has organized summer study abroad programs since 1993. Students participate in lectures and studio and travel to the host country for approximately six weeks. During 2007 a group participated in the Slovenia Study Abroad Program, and sent back regular email and photo updates.

The European Study Abroad Program offers students an opportunity to travel widely in either central or western Europe. Odd years are based in Vienna (central Europe) while even years focus on Paris (western Europe). 2008's travel will focus on Paris but also visit Barcelona and Amsterdam among other cities.

Each summer a group of students from the City & Regional Planning section participate in the Dresden Exchange Program with the Technical University of Dresden. The theme is always sustainable urban development with a specific focus and subtopics.

10-Day Interim Travel Programs

The Spring Break Study Abroad Program is a ten day program aimed at immersing students in the culture, history, architectural, landscape architectural and urban environment of a European city. Recent trips have gone to London, while in 2009 the group will visit Barcelona.

The Public Space in Italy program gives students the opportunity to spend ten days during December in Rome and Florence fulfilling the Arch H698.03 seminar requirements which concerns contemporary and historic conditions of public space from various disciplines.
