Head of the Architecture Section
AUSTIN E. KNOWLTON SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
The Ohio State University
The Architecture Section of the Knowlton School is seeking a dynamic and accomplished leader. The section has a longstanding reputation for the cultural practice of architecture, combining technical depth with conceptual breadth to creatively project the discipline’s future. The ideal candidate will be interdisciplinary-minded with a recognized voice in the current discourse of architectural design, theory, environment and urbanism.
The Head of the Architecture Section will enjoy considerable resources to chart future trajectories: the university has an aggressive hiring campaign; the College of Engineering seeks partnerships with the school; and the school’s Landscape Architecture and City and Regional Planning Sections afford interdisciplinary opportunities. Additional resources within the Architecture Section include international programs, the Baumer Visiting Professorships, the LeFevre Emerging Practitioner Fellowship, and endowed lecture and exhibition series. The work of the section’s students and faculty has been exhibited in the past three Venice Architecture Biennales. Publications include Source Books, PRAXIS, and 1:12.
The Knowlton School is housed in Knowlton Hall, an award-winning building designed by Mack Scogin and Merril Elam, which features a library, fabrication lab, rooftop garden and café. Architecture has 250 undergraduate and 70 graduate students, 16 full-time and 17 auxiliary faculty members, and the support of 19 staff members. The Ohio State University is located in Columbus, Ohio, the prosperous center of a diverse population of one million people. Columbus offers excellent schools, vibrant neighborhoods, and cultural amenities such as the Wexner Center for the Arts.
Candidates should demonstrate the promise of making a significant contribution to the discipline, and the character and energy to direct the creative and intellectual life of the section. Candidates should have the ability to direct curricula, allocate budgets, mentor and supervise faculty, and promote the school to peers, alumni, and prospective students and faculty. Applicants must possess a professional degree or a PhD in Architecture or related discipline as well as significant professional and/or teaching experience. Candidates at the rank of Associate or Full Professor are preferred.
Initial screening will be conducted on the basis of a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and a list of three references (contacted at a later date). Review of applicants will begin 1 December 2016 and continue until the position is filled. Materials should be sent as one pdf to Doug Sershen at firstname.lastname@example.org.
