Architecture Student Is Selected as a Finalist in The 2nd Advanced Architecture Contest

Undergraduate architecture student Kaveh August Arbab has been honored as a Finalist in The 2nd Advanced Architecture Contest. The contest, which was sponsored by the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, challenged entrants to
"...design, in any part of the world, a single dwelling or a residential building in which there is specific development of innovative construction proposals in relation to the use of new materials, the integration of energy systems in the construction, the insertion of the architecture in the landscape, or any other strategy that serves to enhance self-sufficiency."
The contest gathered over 1100 competitors from more than 90 countries all over the world and 255 proposals submitted. Proposals were evaluated by a 27-member jury whose members included Neil Gershenfeld, Greg Lynn, Behrokh Khoshnevis, and Branko Kolarevic.
Arbab's proposal focuses on the use of carbon aerogel in a housing proposal in which "a wire mesh would be woven through a structural bamboo frame using traditional Vietnamese weaving techniques ... the structural bamboo frame would act as a loom for the weaving to take place. ... [T]he aerogel would be pumped through the bamboo frame and seep out onto the mesh to form a durable surface."
Arbab pursued this competition during the summer of 2007 as an independent study with Associate Professor Beth Blostein.
