Architect Jesse Reiser to speak at OSU

As part of the Knowlton School of Architecture (KSA) Lecture Series, Jesse Reiser, Principal of the firm, Reiser + Umemoto RUR Architecture P.C., will speak on his work on Thursday, November 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the Knowlton Hall Auditorium on the campus of The Ohio State University.

Completing wide-ranging projects including furniture design, residential projects, commercial structures, large-scale infrastructure projects, and landscape designs, Reiser + Umemoto RUR Architecture P.C. was founded in 1986 by Reiser and co-prinicpal, Nanako Umemoto. The principals consider their firm to be a laboratory that attempts to synthesize social, cultural and structural ideas into their architectural designs. Shortlisted for an international competition for the redevelopment of a railway route and station in Taiwan, the firm has also completed a design proposal, through an invited competition, for the New Museum of Contemporary Art in Manhattan. Reiser + Umemoto, collaboratively working with a team of internationally acclaimed firms, was selected as one of six design teams to submit a proposal for the World Trade Center site.

In addition to his position as Principal of Reiser + Umemoto, Reiser is a full-time Assistant Professor of Architecture at Princeton University. A native of New York City, he completed his Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1981 from the Cooper Union in New York and his Master of Architecture degree in 1984 from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Reiser is a Fellow in Architecture of the American Academy of Rome and a Fellow of the Institute for Urban Design in New York.

Reiser + Umemoto were selected in 2002 as finalists in the design competition for the BMW factory in Leipzig, Germany, a project for which they received the AIA 2002 Design Award, First Mention.  For the design of the exhibition, Le Corbusier at Princeton 14-16 November 1935, held at the Princeton Art Museum, the firm received the Graphics Design Annual Award 2002 and the Environmental Design Award from the American Institute of Graphic Artists.

With their work exhibited around the world in shows in Oslo, Bregenz, Paris, Graz, Tokyo, Kyoto, London, Rome, Amsterdam and New York, Reiser + Umemoto is currently preparing the book, A Handbook of Novel Tectonics, with grants from the New York State Council of the Arts and the Graham Foundation.
