"The aim of the sophomore year design studio is to investigate basic architectural concepts and to provide the environment for students to gain technical skills and representational ability in communicating complex architectural ideas and positions. The Spring quarter builds on the skills learned in Arch 241 and 242 and develops the student's understanding and abilities in moving between systems of representation and abstraction to their actualization in specific physical, material and contextual fields. The quarter's focus is on the translation of architectural ideas to full scale installations, site specific, one-to-one scale constructions designed for the environment of Knowlton Hall. The intention is for the projects to focus on the performative nature of materials and systems through the thematic confrontation with the atmospheric possibilities offered by the effects of particular material behaviors."
