Events

Every year, the KSA hosts several major events for students, beginning with orientation in the summer, followed by a series architecture and landscape architecture focused trips and activites during the academic year. Together, these activities and additional interaction with KSA faculty, staff, and other students provide a solid foundation for your Ohio State experience.

Freshman Orientation

During the summer, incoming freshman students attend orientation at Ohio State to explore the campus, meet new friends, and schedule classes for autumn quarter. Scholars students attend orientation in June, while Honors orienatation sessions are held in July. At this session, students meet with the architecture and landscape architecture advisors, Amy Shaw and Angi Beer, and learn about required and elective classes, portfolios, and acceptance into the major.

Autumn Quarter Activity

The featured activity for autumn quarter is a day trip to Fallingwater, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Fallingwater is located in western Pennsylvania. The date of this year's trip is Saturday, November 1, 2008. Honors and Scholars Students are strongly encouraged to participate. There will be a nominal cost.

Also, during autumn quarter, students will begin to plan for their participation in the spring break study abroad program. The 2009 trip will be to a European destination. Students are required to apply to the program in autumn quarter, and accepted students will take preparatory class in winter quarter in advance of the trip. The winter quarter class counts as a three credit hour elective. Aditionally, students will receive five credit hours for their participation in the actual trip. Tuition and the program fee will be applied to the student's spring quarter statement of account. (See Spring Break Activity below for additional information.)

Winter Quarter Activity

Winter quarter is demanding. Honors and Scholars student enroll in first-year design studio during this term. The rigorous studio course provides a hands-on experience with design and enables students the opportunity to develop a portfolio. In addition to studio, students will spend time this quarter meeting with faculty and learning more about the different disciplines of architecture and landscape architecture. After this quarter, students will be better prepared to make a decision about with program, architecture or landscape architecture, they'd like to pursue.

Spring Break Activity

After the rigors of winter quarter, student are excited to visit an international location during spring break. The trip includes airfare, lodging, all breakfasts, some group dinners, transportation, and admission costs. The group will depart from Columbus on Wednesday, March 18, 2009, and return to Columbus on Saturday, March 28, 2009. At this time, the exact location and itinerary is still being finalized. As soon as details are fully confirmed, the location and program cost will be announced. Students who are interested in participating in this or another study abroad program during their time at Ohio State should take steps to apply for a passport as soon as possible.

Spring Quarter Activity

A weekend trip to Chicago is the highlight of spring quarter. Students will travel to Chicago during the first weekend in May. The trip will include the Chicago Architecture Foundation's riverboat cruise, visits to IIT, Millenium Park, the suburb of Oak Park, and a visit to a local architecture or landscape architecture firm. Student will travel around the city on public transportation and foot and interact with both historic and contemporary examples of architecture and landscape architecture. Students who wish to participate will be asked to apply for the trip. The cost is approximately $200/student.
