Major Crises and Hidden Challenges: How Urban Regions React to Problems and Hazards

For 2004, the focus of the class will be on how urban regions react to crisis. This will include the examination of economic growth, tourism, flooding, emergency management, housing change and other issues in large and small cities.

The six general topics to be covered within this theme are:

• Demographic and housing change and community futures
• Actors and programs in redevelopment
• Economic growth and transportation issues
• Events and tourism as new forms of economic development
• Flooding and environmental hazards
• Emergency management systems
