The challenge for this project was to design three separate living spaces for three different programs, each of which accommodates a different scale of human: 1) an extroverted family of four at 1:1 scale; 2) a live/work residence for a single lawyer at 1:2 scale; 3) an apartment building for 6 introverts, each in a separate household, at 1:4 scale.

The project design seeks to show the juxtaposition between these various scales by de-familiarizing the scale and function of iconic household objects. Objects such as electrical outlets, air vents, crown moulding, and so forth are designed at abnormally large scales such that they begin to perform in new and unique ways from one program scale to the next. For example, crown moulding and baseboard can perform as a type of wainscoting at 1:1, as furniture at 1:2, and as the wall itself at 1:4. As a rule, the absolute size of the household object is kept constant across all three scales in order to emphasize the unique relationship it establishes with each respective household.

As a means of representation, the project is presented as a series of scenes or vignettes. These vignettes give an up close look of different scales coming into collision and various household objects performing in new ways.  While some moments are larger and more obvious, others are deliberately left subtler, encouraging the viewer to take a closer look to find the nuances.

Regarding the exterior façade design, to continue the theme of de-familiarizing the scale of iconic objects, the building is wrapped in a pixelated image of a giant wood grain. Each of the four sides show the wood grain at different levels of resolution, testing it recognizability as an icon. The site is conceived of as a Claes Oldenburg inspired sculpture garden, whereby common outdoor objects (e.g. benches, fire hydrants) are repurposed at exaggerated scales.
