Surplus Rising

February 28, 2010 - 7:00pm to April 8, 2010 - 8:00pm

Surplus Rising is an exploration into the infrastructure of global industry—what it looks like, where it came from, and where it is going. For this exhibition, Christensen will be presenting 32 photographs of industrial “surplus”—the machines and machine parts that have been abandoned by factories across the United States as they have closed their doors. Surprisingly, these machines generally find second lives as they are retrofitted to work in new factories, very often overseas in countries such as India, Mexico, and China. Christensen has tracked the global life cycle of a selection of these machines, and this map will be on display alongside the photographs. Surplus Rising also will include a sonic element, a soundtrack of the industrial warehouse in Cleveland, Ohio, where much of Christensen’s research originated. A website about the project will be on display.

Christensen will be speaking about her book, Big Box Reuse, on April 7 at 5:30pm.
