Architecture, Landscape and City Scholars

The Architecture, Landscape and City Scholars program offers exciting opportunities for incoming freshman interested in architecture, landscape architecture and city and regional planning. Live, learn and have fun together!

The program creates a supportive, close-knit residential community that focuses on growing students’ understanding of the historical, cultural, and social significance of the built and natural environments through site visits, workshops, seminars and travel opportunities. Students live and learn together. All first-year students (unless commuting from home) live together on North campus – ideally located a short walk from Knowlton Hall. This living environment encourages the development of life-long friendships.

Admission to major

Scholars students are admitted directly to the major of their choice in the Knowlton School.

What we do

Students gain knowledge and insight though shared courses and especially though exploration and travel outside of the classroom. Service opportunities, local site visits and workshops provide a measure of aptitude and awareness. Finally, social activities provide an outlet for informal interaction and a way to engage with students across years of the program.

Architecture, Landscape and City Scholars develop close ties with each other and demonstrate academic success on many levels.

Architecture, Landscape and City Scholars participate in:

  • Linked courses - ARCH/LARCH 2300 Outlines of the Built Environment and SCHOLAR 1100
  • Skill-building - Photoshop/Illustrator, architectural sketching, portfolio development
  • Site visits - Franklin Park Conservatory, Center for Architecture and Design, Columbus neighborhoods, local firms
  • Community service - SERVitecture activities, community development, Cbus Design Week, Buckeyethon
  • Social activities - intramural sports teams, haunted house trips, Design Rolls Architecture Bike Tour, group dinners
  • Travel - exploration of unique Columbus neighborhoods, daytrips around Ohio, weekend trip to Chicago, international trips to Barcelona and London
