Instructor Profile

 

Each course is led and monitored by a professor of City and Regional Planning at the Ohio State University.

Within each course, planners, attorneys, planning and zoning commissioners and others involved in the planning process share their experience in dealing with the course topic.

Below are just a few of the people that are participating in the development of Planning Education at a Distance courses:

D.G. Buck Abbey, ASLA is Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University. Abbey has taught planning, design and site engineering classes at LSU since 1974. He is a recognized authority on municipal landscape codes and is author of the book, U.S. Landscape Ordinances, published by John Wiley & Sons in 1998. His research web site www.greenlaws.lsu.edu provides additional information about his work. Abbey received his terminal degree in Landscape Architecture from Harvard University.

Carol Barrett, FAICP
Barrett is the Director of Planning for the City of San Marcos, Texas. She was president of the National Capital and the Texas Chapter of the American Planning Association. She is author of Everyday Ethics for Practicing Planners.

Dale Bertsch, FAICP
Bertsch is a partner at Burns, Bertsch and Harris. He is also a professor emeritus with the City and Regional Planning program at the Ohio State University.

Tim DeWitt
DeWitt works as a consultant for Bennett and Williams Environmental Consultants. He provides consulting services to local governments on Land Evaluation and Site Analysis, GIS and Conservation development.

Jennifer Evans-Cowley, PhD, AICP
Professor Evans-Cowley serves on the faculty of the City and Regional Planning program at The Ohio State University. She also serves on the Clintonville Area Commission in Columbus, Ohio.

Steve Gordon, AICP
Gordon is a Professor in the City and Regional Planning program at the Ohio State University.

Chad Gibson, AICP
Gibson is a Senior Planner with the City of Dublin, Ohio. He was involved in the development of the City's Large Format Retail Guidelines.

Peggy Hall, JD
Hall is the Director of the Agricultural and Rural Law Program at The Ohio State University. She conducts legal research and outreach in the areas of land use law, rural-urban land use, water and drainage and agriculture.

Phil Laurien, AICP
Laurien is the Executive Director of the Delaware County Regional Planning Commission. He has been working with local communities on developing conservation zoning ordinances.

Larry Libby, PhD
Libby is the Swank Professor in Rural-Urban Policy at The Ohio State University. He works on subjects related to competition for land and water at the rural-urban interface; policies designed to affect the rights and responsibilities of competitors for natural resources; the environmental consequences and contributions of production agriculture; and the economic and social performance of policies and institutions affecting the use of natural resources.

Jack Lucks, Jr.
Lucks is the Chairman of Continental Communities, Ltd. and a principal and director of Continental Real Estate Companies. Continental Communities is the developer for the Victorian Gate infill project in the Short North area of Columbus, Ohio.

Stu Meck, FAICP
Meck is a Senior Research Fellow with the American Planning Association. He is the principal investigator the American Planning Association's Growing Smarter Legislative Initiative.

Kenneth Pearlman, JD, AICP
Professor Pearlman serves as the head of the City and Regional Planning program at The Ohio State University. Pearlman is the author of Ohio Planning and Zoning Law, a primer on planning law in Ohio. He also serves as a Planning and Zoning Commissioner for the City of Worthington, Ohio.

Laura Shinn, AIA
Shinn is a Senior Campus Planner for the Ohio State University. She has served for the last seven years on the German Village Commission in Columbus, Ohio, where she is responsible for reviewing design proposals.
