Online Courses for Planning Practice

Green Building Methods

In this 100% online course, students learn about green building methods, techniques and practices and how they can be applied to planning practice. The course focuses on concepts associated with Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design® (LEED®). LEED® is a green building certification program developed by the U.S. Green Building Council® (USGBC®) that recognizes building practices that save money, reduce water consumption, improve indoor air quality, make better material choices, and overall have less negative impacts to the environment.

This course can be taken for credit by current Ohio State students by enrolling in an offering of CRPLAN 5160: Green Building Methods for Planning. 

The course is offered to professionals seeking continuing education credits through the College of Engineering Professional and Distance Education Programs office for a course fee. Four continuing education credits (CEUs) are granted upon successful completion of the course.

Creative Place Marketing

One of the reasons that elected officials and economic development professionals are interested in arts and culture is their ability to attract dollars, people, and recognition to communities. This 100% online course introduces the idea of creative placemaking and creative place marketing, explores issues in place marketing and introduces students to key considerations for developing place marketing plans, cultural tourism strategies, and other initiatives that improve the quality and economics of place through arts and culture. We will also investigate the emotional aspects of place, how people feel connected to a location through many cultural aspects and social justice issues that often emerge as places evolve.

This course can be taken for credit by current Ohio State students by enrolling in an offering of CRPLAN 5670: Creative Place Marketing.

Planning and Zoning Fundamentals for Elected and Appointed Leaders

The City and Regional Planning Program at The Ohio State University provides this 100% online course to introduce appointed and elected municipal leaders to city planning concepts, municipal governance, and public service. This training will help prepare new and current local leaders for their roles in guiding their municipality in addition to promoting civil discourse in their community.

The course is co-taught by Kim Burton and Kyle Ezell, both faculty in the City and Regional Planning Program at The Ohio State University. Kim has over 18 year experience working in both the public and private sectors for state and local agencies, and Kyle has over 24 years experience as a practicing City Planner.

The course is offered through the College of Engineering Professional and Distance Education Programs office for a course fee.
