City and Regional Planning Dual Degree and Second Major Options
In addition to the combined BS/MCRP program, students interested in pursuing the Bachelor of Science in City and Regional Planning (BSCRP) can choose to pursue a dual degree or a second major (M2) with another discipline on campus.
Students choose a dual degree or a second major for a variety of reasons:
- personal interest in the subject matter;
- development of knowledge and skills required to meet their career goals;
- or preparation for graduate or professional school.
Talk to your assigned advisor about the feasibility of pursuing a second major or dual degree and to discuss specific requirements.
City and Regional Planning Dual Degree and Double Major Policy
Students interested in pursuing either of these options are strongly encouraged to reach out to both departments as soon as possible for advice regarding degree planning, curriculum updates, and course overlap.

Policies for Dual Degrees
- Students are simultaneously enrolled in two different colleges.
- Students must complete defined requirements for both degree programs.
- General education courses may overlap, but all GE requirements that are unique to one college must be completed.
- No overlap is allowed between major coursework.
- The City and Regional Planning curriculum requires 32 credit hours of electives. Within those electives, students must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours of City and Regional Planning departmental electives.
- The remaining 20 credit hours of City and Regional Planning electives may overlap with the second-degree requirements.
- Students must earn a minimum of 151 credit hours.
- Students receive two degrees, one from each college, and must choose a college to walk with at commencement.
- Students may graduate with both degrees in the same term or in different terms for each degree.
- Students receive two diplomas.
Policies for Double Majors: City and Regional Planning Primary Major
- Students must complete the general education requirements for the City and Regional Planning major only.
- Students must complete defined requirements for both degree programs.
- Overlap between majors and between GE and majors is permitted, provided each major has a minimum of 18 unique hours, and coursework for the second major is approved by the M2 department.
- Students are not required to complete City and Regional Planning electives.
- Students must earn a minimum of 122 hours.
- The Knowlton School is responsible for certifying the students for graduation. The second department is responsible for certifying the second major if not already done by DARS (similar to the policy regarding minors).
- Any honors student pursuing a second major outside of City and Regional Planning is not required to complete an honors version of the second major.
- Students receive one degree from the university. The second major appears on a student's transcripts only.
- Students must graduate with both majors in the same term.
- Students receive one diploma in the Bachelor of Science in City and Regional Planning. The M2 appears on the student's university transcript.
Policies for Double Majors: City and Regional Planning Secondary Major
- Students must complete the general education requirements for their primary major only.
- Students must complete defined requirements for both degree programs. Consult with the Knowlton Student Services staff for City and Regional Planning course selection.
- Overlap between majors and between GE and majors is permitted, provided each major has a minimum of 18 unique hours, and coursework for the second major is approved by the M2 department.
- Students are not required to complete City and Regional Planning electives.
- Students must earn the minimum hours required for the primary program.
- The primary major is responsible for certifying the students for graduation. The Knowlton School is responsible for certifying the CRP major if not already done by DARS (similar to the policy regarding minors).
- Any honors student pursing a second major in City and Regional Planning is not required to complete an honors version of the major.
- Students receive one degree from the university. The City and Regional Planning major appears on the student's transcript only.
- Students must graduate with both majors in the same term.
- Students receive one diploma with the degree from their primary department. The M2 in City and Regional Planning appears on the student's university transcript.
