Pavel Getov / Studio Antares

September 19, 2012 - 5:30pm

Pavel Getov will present a lecture entitled “Trades” at 5:30PM on Wednesday, September 19 in the Gui Auditorium in Knowlton Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

“Trades” compares the effects of distinct building traditions and construction cultures on the design outcome. It elaborates on the interaction between prime and sub parties involved in the design and construction process, reveals strategies for how architects could interact directly with the trades for benefit of the design, and discusses the integrated project delivery method as a design tool for achieving advanced architecture. The lecture is based on case studies of several Morphosis projects, primarily focusing on Caltrans in Los Angeles and The New Academic Building for the Cooper Union in New York.

Pavel Getov founded Studio Antares as a collaborative practice seeking integration between architecture, arts and environment. Getov graduated with honors from the Higher Institute of Architecture and Civil Engineering in Sofia, Bulgaria with a diploma in architecture in 1988 and holds a Master of Architecture degree from the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles. From 1991 to 1997 he worked for Richard Meier & Partners on The Getty Center in L.A. From 1997 to 2002, while an associate with NBBJ Architects, Getov was responsible for the delivery of several large scale projects including the 6,000-seat Dodge Theater in Phoenix, completed in 2002. From 2002 to 2007, as a director at Morphosis Architects, he was the leading architect for the highly acclaimed and award-wining building for the California Department of Transportation Headquarters – Caltrans in Los Angeles, completed in 2004; the Multiple Housing Project in Madrid, Spain, completed in 2007; and the New Academic Building for The Cooper Union in New York, completed in 2009.

He has lectured at The University of Cincinnati, UCLA, USC, Southern California Institute of Architecture, Carnegie Mellon University, The Cooper Union, USGBC and the American Institute of Architects and other universities and institutions. Currently as a partner in Studio Antares he is designing projects of various scales in Europe, L.A. and New York.
