Roderick Wyllie / SurfaceDesign, San Francisco

Gui Auditorium / Knowlton Hall
November 9, 2016 - 5:30pm

Roderick Wyllie will present the lecture "Bomarzo to Barnacles" in Knowlton Hall’s Gui Auditorium at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9, 2016. This lecture will present the intersection of narrative and material innovation in our recent work. Our projects range in scale from gardens to airports but maintain an attachment to revealing the site history through the manipulation and celebration of native and commonplace materials. The lecture is free and open to the public. An award-winning landscape architect, Wyllie is founding principal at SurfaceDesign, Inc., a San Francisco-based design practice. Wyllie is responsible for the residential, estate and vineyard designs within the firm. His passion for landscape architecture and knowledge in materials construction techniques has given way to some of the firm’s most memorable gardens.

SurfaceDesign was established in 2001 to provide clients with a broad range of professional design services, including landscape architecture, urban design and master planning. The practice is engaged in projects of a variety of different scales, both locally and internationally: estate design, park design, hospitality, corporate campuses, municipal streetscapes, and large-scale land use planning and urban design projects. SurfaceDesign creates projects that have a strong relationship to people and the natural environment, and is passionate about craftsmanship and sustainability.

Under the leadership of James A. Lord, Geoff di Girolamo, and Wyllie, SurfaceDesign has developed into an innovative and multidisciplinary design practice, employing the talents of landscape designers, planners and architectural designers. The firm’s work methodology emphasizes understanding and accommodating the specific needs of each client and the unique programmatic and contextual requirements of each project. Our clients include corporations, real estate developers, architects, planners, public agencies, and homeowners.

SurfaceDesign’s recent awards include an Architectural League of New York Emerging Voices award (2014); the American Society of College and University Planning Award and 2015 AIA New York Merit Award for the Smithsonian Institute South Mall Master Plan; the AIA San Francisco Honor Award, (2015), American Institute of Architects San Francisco, Honor Award in Energy and Sustainability (2013) and the San Francisco Beautiful Award (2012) for the Lands End Lookout project; the American Society of Landscape Architecture National Honor Award (2015) and Historic Hawaii Foundation Preservation Honor Award (2014) for the Ward Village Center/IBM Building; a California Preservation Foundation and Preservation Design Award (013) and American Institute of Architects San Francisco, Honor Award in Energy and Sustainability (2013) for Buena Vista Vineyards; and an Association of Partners for Public Lands Award, Commemorative Program/Project (2013), Engineering News Record Merit Award, Small Projects Stewardship Excellence (2012) and the Stewardship Excellence Award, Cultural Landscape Foundation (2012) for the Golden Gate Bridge Plaza in San Francisco.
