The Knowlton School of Architecture is pleased to announce the nine winners of the 2013 KSA Architecture Research Travel Awards (ARTA) competition. The ARTA program was established to encourage independent travel initiatives of up to 30 days by KSA students from all degree programs. The ARTA program is made possible by generous support from the Columbus Foundation.

City and Regional Planning faculty member Gulsah Akar and Professors Rabi Mishalani (PI) and Mark McCord of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering were awarded a research grant in the amount of $39,852 from the NEXTRANS Center for their project “Investigating the Potential of Employer-based Real-Time Ridesharing”.

Master of Architecture students at the Knowlton School of Architecture participated in a one week Figural Structures Workshop using the advanced structural analysis software karamba3d. Developed by Bollinger-Grohmann Engineers GmbH, karamba3d is a finite element analysis program tailored to the needs of architects.

Knowlton School of Architecture Professor José Oubrerie has published Architecture With and Without Le Corbusier (a collaboration between the City College of New York, Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture, and Oscar Riera Ojeda Publishers). Lushly illustrated with sketches, drawings, models, and building photos, the book also includes a forward by George Ranalli, introduction by Kenneth Frampton, and text by Oubrerie, Paul Pinney, and Jeff Kipnis. The volume is edited by Luis Burriel Bielza and Oscar Riera Ojeda.

On Tuesday, December 4, 2012 Dahamani Bukari, or Jeremiah to the Knowlton School of Architecture community, passed away unexpectedly. He was the head planner of the Offinso North District of Ghana and has played a vital role in the KSA’s Ghana Sustainable Change program.

The annual Richard J. and Martha D. Denman Undergraduate Research Forum will take place on Thursday, March 28, 2013. Registration for the Forum, which highlights outstanding undergraduate student research, will be open from Monday, January 7 through Friday, February 8, 2013.

KSA Master of Landscape Architecture student Tatiana Parfenova has been awarded an Alumni Grant for Graduate Research and Scholarship (AGGRS) from the OSU Graduate School.

The Knowlton School of Architecture is saddened to announce the passing of alumnus and long-time friend and supporter of the School, Frank Elmer. Frank passed away on Tuesday, December 11 at his home after a long illness. He earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Kent State University and, in 1967, received a Master of City and Regional Planning degree from the KSA.

Alumnus Kathy Fox, BS LArch ’80, has been selected as a Strong Cities, Strong Communities (SC2) Fellow. As a SC2 Fellow, Kathy will be working with Youngstown Mayor Charles Sammarone, who has assembled an aggressive agenda to improve economic development, city service delivery and regional cooperation in Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.
