KSA undergraduate architecture students at the Akron Art Museum

As part of a recent site visit to Cleveland, third year undergraduate (U3) Architecture students toured the Akron Art Museum, an award-winning project designed by Austrian cooperative architectural design firm Coop Himmelb(l)au.

This summer, Landscape Architecture Assistant Professor Jesus J. Lara was guest editor and contributor to a special issue of the Journal of Urbanism, Latino Urbanism: Placemaking in 21st Century American Cities, which expands upon the growing literature on Latino Urbanism, focusing on its role in shaping and incorporating Latino needs in the development of American cities.

The academic calendar isn’t the only thing that’s changed for the new school year. Earlier this summer, the KSA launched an updated website, redesigned to provide expanded and better-organized content for students, faculty, staff, and anyone wanting to learn more about the Knowlton School of Architecture and its programs.

Socrates Sculpture Park and the Architectural League of New York have selected Jerome Haferd (BS ARCH ’07) and K. Brandt Knapp as the inaugural recipients of a new grant and residency for emerging architects and designers to produce and exhibit a full-scale project at Socrates Sculpture Park. Socrates, in partnership with the League, established the residency to explore the intersections between architecture and sculpture and the increasing overlaps in references, materials, and building techniques between the two disciplines. The completed project opened to the public on Saturday, July 14, 2012, and will remain on view through October 21, 2012.

Each year, the Dayton Chapter of the American Institute of Architects awards a scholarship to two outstanding students from the Dayton/Miami Valley Region. This year, the two $1,000 AIA Dayton scholarships to support continuing architectural studies were awarded to KSA Master of Architecture student Natalie Snyder and 2012 BS Architecture alumnus Patrick Heron, who will be attending the Harvard Graduate School of Design this fall.

Knowlton School of Architecture students taking part in the KSA’s Spring 2012 Italy Study Abroad Program in Rome opened an exhibit entitled per/corsi di roma, Sunday, May 28 at the gallery Frane Letterarie.

On April 30, the Knowlton School of Architecture student journal, One:Twelve, invited students, faculty and friends to a party in the Knowlton Hall Jury Space to celebrate the publication of Issue 004.

KSA Final Reviews for Spring quarter 2012 will be held Wednesday, March 23 - Monday, June 4 in the Jury and Center Spaces of Knowlton Hall. Final Friday, an event celebrating student accomplishment during the quarter, will follow final reviews with an awards reception hosted by KSA Director Mike Cadwell.

The University Architect’s Office at OSU approached the KSA’s Landscape Architecture Section about conducting a design charrette to memorialize Chic Harley on the site of Ohio Field, OSU’s first football stadium located on the corner of High and Woodruff.
