Landscape Architecture Alumni Create Lawrence Walquist Endowed Scholarship

The Knowlton School commemorated 100 years of the Landscape Architecture program during the week of Homecoming with special events, alumni reunions and student interactions. One of the highlights of this week of celebration included the surprise announcement of the Lawrence W. Walquist, Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund. The Fund aims to raise $100,000 to award scholarships to undergraduate students pursuing a Landscape Architecture degree. The announcement was made on Thursday, October 8 at the Centennial Celebration by three Knowlton alumni and former students of Walquist, who have been the driving force behind the creation of the endowment. A standing ovation honored Walquist as he thanked his former students with handshakes and hugs. Kathleen Fox, FASLA (BSLA ’80), a Vice President at The Pizzuti Companies – Pizzuti Solutions, has been very passionate about honoring Walquist through the endowment:

"Larry gave so much to all his students during his long teaching career. It was wonderful to see how much it meant to him to have this fund established by his former students in honor of his teaching contributions in Landscape Architecture at Ohio State, especially during the kickoff reception for the Centennial Celebration of the OSU Landscape Architecture program. I am thrilled to have been a small part of helping recognize his work through this new scholarship fund."

"Your professors have a profound impact on your life and career, and few have had the lasting impact on so many as Larry,” commented Keith Myers, FASLA (BSLA ’78), who serves as the Associate Vice President for Physical Planning and Real Estate at Ohio State. “His ability to challenge students and instill a light-hearted atmosphere in the studio left a lasting impression on us all."

Larry Walquist taught in the Landscape Architecture program at Ohio State from 1977-2004. In 1978, he created the Master of Landscape Architecture degree program, which chaired for six years. But perhaps his most profound accomplishment is the lasting impact he had on his students.

“It is fitting that we honor Larry’s life-long commitment to teaching through this scholarship fund in light of the significant impact that he has had on so many of us as practitioners and as people,” says Brian Kinzelman, FASLA (BSLA ‘77), Principal at MKSK. “His rigor as an instructor and his counsel as a friend have been invaluable to us all over the years. He embodies all that is good in this program and profession.”
