George Van Niel, 1934-2018

The Knowlton School is saddened to report the passing of George Van Niel, AIA. George passed away at the age of 83 on June 27, 2018 at the Veteran Administration's Dayton Hospice. He was a loving husband to the late Mary (Toth) and Lucretia (Cuddy); beloved father of Tracy, Jeff (Nancy), Kelly (Paul) Stark and Jon (Silvia); grandfather to Taylor (Ryan); brother to Thomas and the late Raymond and William; uncle and cousin to many.

George was a proud US Marine Corp veteran-Korea; a 1961 graduate of The Ohio State University School of Architecture; fellow and distinguished member of the Construction Specifications Institute, and namesake of the CSI Columbus Chapter's George A Van Niel Scholarship Fund awarded to OSU architecture program students. He was a past AIA Columbus chapter president.

A respected and award-winning specification writer, George prepared specifications for many iconic structures in Central Ohio, including the Ohio History Center, the Wexner Center for the Arts, the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Crew Stadium, and the new Franklin County Courthouse.
