Katherine Jenkins and Parker Sutton Awarded Joint MacDowell Residency

Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture Katherine Jenkins and Landscape Architecture Lecturer Parker Sutton have been awarded a joint MacDowell Residency during the spring of 2019. MacDowell is a leading contemporary arts organization located in Peterborough, New Hampshire that brings multidisciplinary artists together to exchange ideas and pursue creative work.’

The team’s collaborative project statement reads:

Our conceptions of and designs for landscapes are limited by the tools at our disposal to represent them. And while digital platforms are here to stay—we advocate for and teach these tools—they are not made specifically for landscape architectural production. This body of work claims greater agency over the tools landscape architects use to represent the built environment.

At the MacDowell Colony we will employ the use of a 3D printer in combination with digital architectural software to design and create custom, manual drawing tools that leverage the strengths of digital technology—its precision, speed, and replicability—while reclaiming the benefits of analog drawing as they pertain to landscape architecture, namely, its haptic, imperfect, and responsive aspects. The manual implementation of digital marks will allow for critical deviations from what is typical or expected of landscape architectural drawings.

Since 1907, MacDowell has provided essential support for emerging and established artists in the disciplines of architecture, film/video arts, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theatre, and visual arts. About 300 artists, selected by a panel comprised of a revolving group of distinguished professionals in each artistic discipline, are awarded fellowships each year and the sole criterion for acceptance is artistic excellence, according to the MacDowell mission statement.
