Mattie is a first-year doctoral student whose current research focuses on selected characteristics of the built environment of historically marginalized communities, including geospatial configuration of greenspaces, and the health disparities of children residing in these communities, including children's analysis and perception of their environment through participatory photomapping.

Mattie received a Master's degree in City and Regional Planning from The Ohio State University. Her thesis, Zoning Practices in the City of Columbus Metropolitan Area and the Impact  on Neighborhood Differentiation, is a qualitative assessment of Columbus, Ohio and 12 surrounding suburbs, which focused on zoning policy and how zoning has been used as a tool to segregate communities from racial and economic aspects.
