Frida Escobedo Studio

Frida Escobedo established her eponymous studio in Mexico City in 2006. The studio’s reputation, initially built on the strength of a series of competition-winning projects in her native country—including the renovation of the Hotel Boca Chica (2008), the El Eco Pavilion (2010), and the expansion of La Tallera Siquieros in Cuernavaca (2012)—has achieved global scope since 2018, when she received the prestigious appointment to design the annual Serpentine Pavilion in London’s Kensington Gardens, becoming the youngest architect to date to undertake the project.

Escobedo’s practice defies the traditional boundaries of the discipline, operating at a wide array of scales and mediums, from buildings and experimental conservation projects to temporary installations and public sculpture, limited edition objects, publications, and exhibition design. Most recently, Escobedo was appointed as the architect to design the new Modern & Contemporary Wing for The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, becoming the youngest and first woman to design a building for the institution.

Following her appointment as the Design Architect for The Tang Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Frida Escobedo opened a studio in New York City in 2022.

Escobedo is the recipient of numerous accolades, including the Architectural League of New York’s Young Architects Forum Award (2009), the BIAU Prize (2014), the Architectural Review Emerging Architecture Award (2016), and the Architectural League Emerging Voices Award (2017). In 2019, she was honored as an International Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and the studio was named by the seminal architecture magazine DOMUS as one of the world’s “100+ Best Architecture Firms.” In addition to her practice, Escobedo has taught at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture (2016), Planning and Preservation (2015), the Architectural Association of London (2016), Harvard’s Graduate School of Design (2016/2019), Rice University (2019), and the most recently at the Yale University (2022).

Dominic Leong, AIA
Leong Leong

Dominic Leong is a founding partner at Leong Leong, where he focuses on architecture as an aesthetic, social, and ecological practice to address the pressing issues of our time. Dominic leads design, research and operational efforts across a variety of projects at Leong Leong. The firm’s work ranges from private houses, bespoke furniture collections, product design, exhibitions, and temporary pavilions to cultural spaces, civic buildings, and social housing.

As a partner at Leong Leong, Dominic’s work has been recognized and supported by various international institutions including the Guggenheim Museo Bilbao, The Architectural League of New York, the American Institute of Architects, and the Graham Foundation. In 2014, Leong Leong designed the US Pavilion at the 14th La Biennale di Venezia.

Projects undertaken by Leong Leong and co-directed by Dominic include the Anita May Rosenstein Campus for the Los Angeles LGBT Center (2019); Ray Philly, a multi-family development in Philadelphia, PA (2022); 3.1 Phillip Lim Flagship in Seoul, Korea (2010); MoMA PS1 Courtyard Coalition in Queens, NY (2022); and Hancock Park House in Los Angeles, CA (2023).

Dominic has been invited to teach at Columbia University, The Cooper Union, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and he has lectured internationally at prominent institutions.

Dominic is also a co-founder of Hawai’i Nonlinear, a Honolulu-based non-profit empowering Indigenous futures in the built environment through art and architecture.

Dominic received a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University, graduating with Honors. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Dominic is a registered architect in the District of Columbia and the States of New York, Hawai’i, and Florida.

The Baumer Series invites prominent researchers and practitioners of architecture, landscape architecture, and city and regional planning to present their work and to engage subjects both topical and enduring.

Is planting a tree a political act? In this lecture, Rosetta Elkin will explore the basic parameters of what designers call "species selection" and why it matters, by describing some of the world's largest planting projects. The evidence reveals planting a tree can either be one of the ultimate offerings to thriving on this planet, or one of the most extreme perversions of human agency over it.

Rosetta Elkin is the academic director of the Masters in Landscape Program and associate professor in the School of Architecture at Pratt.

Elkin works with landscape as a practice and a medium. One of the most direct ways to engage with landscape as a designer is to pay attention to plants; through behavior, across time and in our everyday lives. When I want to learn more about a plant, I pursue growth, not form. Most often, this draws me into the ground since plant life develops underfoot.

In writing and scholarship, Elkin aims to experiment with the ways in which we compose our worlds, blurring the traditional boundaries in the research process. Professionally, Elkin is the founding Principal of Practice Landscape, a collaborative studio that prioritizes landscape-making, gardens, public exhibitions, and horticultural design to promote a more thoughtful and accountable design agenda, while Practice Grant supports community attempts to expand land-based practices.

Elkin is also a Research Associate at Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum. Her work has received numerous awards including the Graham Foundation Grant, Harvard Climate Solutions Award, and the Garden Club of America Rome Prize in landscape architecture and has been exhibited widely in venues such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Les Jardins de Metis, Chelsea Festival, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

Authored books range from a survey of tree planting programs across drylands in Plant Life: The Entangled Politics of Afforestation (University of Minnesota Press, 2022) and Tiny Taxonomy (Actar 2017) a publication which reflects on the scale of individual plants through a reading of three garden installations. Elkin’s most recent book project is a fieldwork-based portrait of climate adaptation around the world, entitled Landscapes of Retreat (K. Verlag, 2023). Elkin has published widely in magazine, journals and other media. Elkin believes in open access publishing, so all titles are also available on Elkin’s website.

Dr. Pamela Karimi is a professor at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth who specializes in the study of modern and contemporary art, architecture, and visual culture in the Middle East.

Dr. Karimi is currently developing a manuscript exploring the nexus between design and environmental issues in the Middle East. This presentation offers a glimpse into this ongoing research. The research is supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and fellowships from Princeton and Heidelberg Universities.

Dr. Karimi’s notable publications include Domesticity and Consumer Culture in Iran (Routledge, 2013) and Alternative Iran: Contemporary Art & Critical Spatial Practice (Stanford University Press, 2022).

Elisa Iturbe is assistant professor at The Cooper Union. Her research and writing are currently focused on the relationship between energy, power, and form. Iturbe also teaches courses on fossil capitalism and carbon modernity at the Yale School of Architecture and Cornell AAP. At Yale, she served as the coordinator of the dual-degree program between the School of Architecture and the School of the Environment. Her writings have been published in AA Files, Log, Perspecta, New York Review of Architecture, and Antagonismos. She guest-edited Log 47, titled “Overcoming Carbon Form” and co-wrote a book with Peter Eisenman titled Lateness. Iturbe is also co-founder of Outside Development, a design and research practice.

For spring 2023, the Baumer Lecture Series returns to Knowlton Hall’s Gui Auditorium for nine in-person lectures that engage ”Engaging the Commons.“ This semester, Knowlton invites scholars, practitioners, and designers to think about how the design professions’ participation in and with the dense social and political webs of the built environment and how active practices might engage these places, our “commons.”

The Baumer Lecture Series invites prominent researchers and practitioners of architecture, landscape architecture, and city and regional planning to present their work and engage with Knowlton faculty and students.

Tatiana Bilbao is the founding principal and CEO of Tatiana Bilbao ESTUDIO, an architecture firm based in Mexico City. The studio aims to integrate social values, collaboration, and sensitive design approaches to architectural work. The firm’s completed projects include the Veracruz Towers, Casa Sorteo TEC, and the Ciudadela.

Bilbao is also the William Henry Bishop Visiting Professor at Yale and has taught at Harvard University GSD, AA Association in London, Columbia University GSAPP, Rice University, the University of Andrés Bello in Chile, and Peter Behrens School of Arts at HS Dusseldorf in Germany. Before founding her firm, Bilbao was an advisor in the Ministry of Development and Housing of the Government of the Federal District of Mexico City. Bilbao is the recipient of the Kunstpreis Berlin, the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture, an Impact Award, the Marcus Prize Award, the Tau Sigma Delta Gold Medal, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the Richard Neutra Award, and the AW Architect of the Year.

Laura Wolf-Powers is an associate professor of urban policy and planning at Hunter College, part of the City University of New York. She has been teaching economic and community development to graduate students since 2002, publishing extensively for both academic and practitioner audiences.

Recent projects include a critical examination of land value capture practices; participatory action research with Black entrepreneurs in East and Central Brooklyn; and a book, University City: History, Race, & Community in the Era of the Innovation District (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2022). She serves on the editorial boards of Metropolitics and of the Journal of the American Planning Association and as an academic advisor to the Urban Manufacturing Alliance, the Pratt Center for Community Development, and the Western Queens Community Land Trust.

Kian Goh, RA, PhD, is an associate professor of urban planning at UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs and Associate Faculty Director of the UCLA Luskin Institute on Inequality and Democracy. She researches the relationships between urban ecological design, spatial politics, and social mobilization in the context of climate change and global urbanization.

Dr. Goh’s recent research investigated the spatial politics of urban climate change responses, with fieldwork sites in cities in North America, Southeast Asia, and Europe. Her current research explores the implications of the global climate justice movement for more equitable and sustainable cities. As a professional architect, she cofounded design firm SUPER-INTERESTING! and has practiced with Weiss/Manfredi and MVRDV. Dr. Goh received a PhD in Urban and Environmental Planning from MIT, and a Master of Architecture from Yale University. She is the author of the book Form and Flow: The Spatial Politics of Urban Resilience and Climate Justice, published by the MIT Press in 2021.

Antoine Picon is the G. Ware Travelstead Professor of the History of Architecture and Technology at Harvard Graduate School of Design where he is also chair of the PhD program. He works on the history of the relations between the built environment and technologies and has published extensively on this subject. He is the author of French Architects and Engineers in the Age of Enlightenment (1992), Claude Perrault (1988), L'Invention de l'ingénieur moderne (1992), La Ville territoire des cyborgs (1998), Les Saint-Simoniens (2002), Digital Culture in Architecture (2010), Ornament: The Politics of Architecture and Subjectivity (2013), Smart Cities: A Spatialised Intelligence (2015), The Materiality of Architecture (2021), and other volumes. He is currently preparing a book on cities, nature, technology, and politics.
