City and Regional Planning Professor Emeritus Jean-Michel Guldmann discussed urban heat islands and how to mitigate them in the July 28, 2022 edition of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Camp Washington is an urban heat island, Rook said, where impervious surfaces—like roads, buildings and parking lots—absorb energy and become a storage system for heat. Once impervious surfaces are built up, it becomes difficult to offset their impact.

“That’s essentially the conundrum…we’ve created the heat island by building cities in place of natural vegetated areas,” said Jean-Michel Guldmann, professor emeritus of city and regional planning at Ohio State University. “Because you have expanding urbanization, you aggravate the problem.”
