Associate Professor of City and Regional Planning and Graduate Studies Chair Harley Etienne delivered “The Benefits and Challenges of University-Led Economic Development” as a part of the 2023 Fall Planning Lecture series hosted by the University of Massachusetts Boston.

UPCD was delighted to host Dr. Harley Etienne, Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director, of The Ohio State University who delivered a compelling lecture on the role colleges and universities play in local economic development. Professor Etienne described a range of approaches that higher educational institutions can take when investing in their local communities. He explore top-down as well as fully collaborative approaches to community economic development. This was a particularly important topic for our campus to consider given the recently approved development plan for the University-owned Dorchester Bay City initiative.
