Associate Professor of City and Regional Planning Yasuyuki Motoyama was featured in the Dayton Daily News to discuss dollar store and grocery access for the article “Residents say they will miss Family Dollar store, even though experts say they have limitations.” Hundreds of Family Dollar stores in Ohio are expected to close over the coming years, which could affect food access for local communities.

Motoyama said he has mixed feelings about dollar stores and and their value because they sell some food products and some stores are closer and more convenient to residents than their other shopping options.

However, he said, “At the same time, these stores have less produce, less healthy items, so from a long-term health perspective I have some concerns too.”
